Brandy Brigman 2025

In the fast-paced world of surgery and endoscopy, precision, preparation, and teamwork are everything. At Scotland Health, we’re proud to celebrate National Surgical Tech Week by recognizing the incredible work of our surgical technologists—the skilled professionals who make safe, high-quality procedures possible every single day.

Whether in the operating room or the endoscopy suite, surgical techs are the backbone of the surgical team. They prepare procedure rooms, ensure instruments are sterile and ready, assist surgeons during procedures, and help maintain a safe and efficient environment for patients. Their attention to detail and commitment to providing safe, high-quality, and compassionate care directly impact patient outcomes—and they do most of it behind the scenes.

This morning we met with Brandy Brigman, one of seven surgical techs working in our Endoscopy Suite at Scotland Memorial Hospital and our off-site Endoscopy Center, to learn more about her role and what drives her passion for the job.

“I’ve been working for Scotland Health for just over a year,” Brandy shared.  “I always wanted to work in health care. I went to Richmond Community College, and when I was hired by Scotland Health, I started out in the operating room and then later moved over to endoscopy.”

As an endoscopy tech, Brandy plays a critical role in supporting physicians like Dr. Brian Parkes and Dr. Stephen Lanuti during procedures. She assists with scopes and ensures they are properly cleaned and decontaminated between uses—a task that requires both technical skill and a deep understanding of infection control.

While many procedures in the endoscopy department may follow a routine, surgical technologists in the department know that no two patients are ever the same. Each individual arrives with unique physical and emotional needs, and often with very different reasons for undergoing care. The techs adapt to these differences with skill and compassion, understanding that both patients and surgeons rely on them to respond to changing needs in real time.

“It’s unpredictable,” she said.  “You wouldn't think that in endoscopy, but we never know what we’re going to walk into. The procedures may be repetitive, but each one is different. Each patient is different.  We have to make sure that the patient is taken care of.”

Brandy finds joy and purpose in her work—especially in the relationships she’s built with her teammates.  “I love my job and my teammates,” she said with a smile.  “We are like a family.”

That sense of camaraderie and shared mission is what makes Scotland Health’s surgical tech team so special. Their work may happen behind the scenes, but the impact they make is front and center in every successful procedure and every patient’s recovery.

So this National Surgical Tech Week, we say thank you to Brandy and all of our surgical technologists. Your skill, dedication, and compassion make Scotland Health stronger—and we’re proud to have you on our team.
