Scotland Health is introducing a new preventive heart screening service now available to the community: coronary calcium scoring.
A coronary calcium scoring scan is a quick, non‑invasive CT scan of the heart that measures calcium‑containing plaque in the coronary arteries. This information helps patients and their doctors better understand the risk for heart disease or heart attack before symptoms appear, allowing for earlier intervention through lifestyle changes, medication, or additional care if needed.
The scan takes about 15 minutes, requires a physician referral, and is available for a flat fee of $149. While the test is not covered by insurance, it offers valuable insight for patients who may be at increased risk for heart disease.
“This scan gives patients important insight into their heart health at an early stage,” said Olujide Lawal, MD, MBA, FACC, Cardiologist at Scotland Health. “It’s fast, accessible, and provides valuable information that can help guide preventive decisions before more serious problems develop.”
Coronary calcium scoring may be appropriate for adults ages 45–70 with risk factors. According to guidelines from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Radiology (ACR) those risk factors include:
The test is not recommended for:
Because the scan uses low‑dose radiation, patients should consult their provider to determine whether it is right for them.
By offering coronary calcium scoring locally, Scotland Health continues its commitment to expanding preventive care services and helping patients take proactive steps to protect their heart health.
