Marlboro Family Practice and Urgent Care, part of the Scotland Physicians Network (SPN), has officially received designation as a Rural Health Clinic (RHC)—continuing Scotland Health’s commitment to strengthening access to high-quality primary and urgent care services across the rural communities it serves.
Marlboro Family Practice and Urgent Care is the third SPN practice to achieve Rural Health Clinic status, following Laurinburg Family Practice and Urgent Care, the first practice in the network to earn the designation, and Maxton Family Practice, which followed shortly thereafter.
Notably, Marlboro Family Practice and Urgent Care achieved this designation with zero deficiencies identified during the survey process—a significant accomplishment that reflects the dedication, preparedness, and high standards upheld by the care team.
“Achieving Rural Health Clinic status with zero deficiencies is an outstanding achievement and a testament to the exceptional work of our physicians, advanced providers and staff,” said Dr. Shelly Lowery, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Practices at Scotland Health. “This recognition confirms that patients in our rural communities receive care that meets rigorous national standards for quality, safety, and coordination—close to home.”
Rural Health Clinic designation recognizes practices that meet nationally established criteria designed to address the unique challenges facing rural healthcare, including workforce shortages, transportation barriers, and access to essential services. The designation supports team-based care models, enhances care coordination, and helps ensure long-term sustainability of primary and urgent care services in underserved areas.
“With each practice that reaches this milestone, we are reinforcing our mission to deliver equitable, high-quality care throughout the region,” said David Pope, Chief Executive Officer and President at Scotland Health. “Marlboro’s achievement reflects our broader strategy to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure while investing in the people and services our communities rely on every day.”
Scotland Health continues working toward Rural Health Clinic designation across its primary care network, ensuring consistent standards of care and expanded access for patients throughout southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.
