Scotland Health Welcomes Scholarship Recipient Danny Oxendine to Patient Accounting Team

Scotland Health is pleased to welcome Danny Oxendine to the Patient Accounting team, where he will serve as a Claims Document Submission Specialist, a newly created role designed to support insurance reimbursement processes and improve the financial experience for patients. Danny's arrival is especially meaningful as he is also a former recipient of a $2,000 Scotland Memorial Foundation scholarship, bringing his journey with Scotland Health full circle.

A Scotland County native and graduate of Scotland Early College High School (SEarCH), Danny attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he initially planned to pursue a career in medicine. While his academic path eventually shifted away from pre-med studies, his desire to help others remained the driving force behind every step of his journey.

"I've always wanted to do something that helps people," Danny said. "Healthcare was my main avenue for that."

The associate’s degree Danny received as part of the SEarCH program gave him a collegiate head start and he graduated with his bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill at just 20 years old.  He went on to build experience in public service, including roles involving Medicaid transportation and child support services. When he learned about the opportunity at Scotland Health, he saw a chance to combine his interest in serving others with his aptitude for working with data and financial processes.

"When I saw this position was open, it felt like everything came full circle," Danny said. "I get to use the skills I've developed while also getting back to my original goal of being part of healthcare."

As a Claims Document Submission Specialist, Danny will focus on supporting insurance reimbursement efforts by submitting required documentation for high-value claims and helping patients update Coordination of Benefits information. The role was created to help streamline claims processing, improve payment accuracy, and reduce administrative workload for other revenue cycle team members.

Most importantly, the position is designed to help patients receive the insurance benefits they are entitled to. By ensuring insurance information is accurate, required claim documentation is submitted promptly, and coverage issues are resolved before they become billing problems, Danny's work will help create a smoother financial experience for patients while reducing delays, confusion, and unnecessary out-of-pocket expenses.

Danny's connection to Scotland Health began years before his first day on the job. While attending UNC-Chapel Hill, he received a $2,000 scholarship from the Scotland Memorial Foundation. Although other financial aid covered much of his educational expenses, the Foundation scholarship enabled him to purchase technology and supplies that became an important part of his academic success.

"I got some really good use out of all of that," Danny said. "It made a big difference during college. I went from being the student without any of the high-tech note-taking and study tools to the student with all of the best stuff."

Reflecting on the impact of the scholarship, Danny credits the Foundation with helping him reach the place he is today.

"In a way, Scotland Memorial Foundation didn’t just help me complete my academic journey, but it helped bring me back to healthcare,” shared Danny. “It may not be in the way I imagined, but I’ll still be helping people with their healthcare, which is what I always wanted to do.”

Danny's story demonstrates how Foundation scholarships can make a lasting impact on students pursuing a wide range of careers. While many recipients go on to become physicians, nurses, and other clinical professionals, scholarship support can also help develop talented individuals who contribute to healthcare in important non-clinical roles.
